Cheryl,

Thanks for reading and glad you agree. I was particularly interested in your statistics about the percentage of women who pursue engineering and the salary ramifications if they do! This past fall, we had a fabulous panel of women engineers come to speak in assembly. Our girls could hear first-hand about career possibilities in design and computer science, many of which may never have occurred to them. For example, one young panelist designs high-tech tents and actually had some of them set up in our common area. If you want information about these speakers, you can contact Nancy Rich at nancy.rich@danahall.org. Good luck!

Great to see this reference to AllGirls (my blog for NCGS) in your post. And glad you picked up on guestblogger Sally Reid's piece. I love hearing that 75 percent of your Grade 12 girls are taking calculus. When I was in high school -- OK it was a looong time ago -- I was an unenthusiastic student of mathematics. Then in college I took calculus, and the scales fell from my eyes. Math was fascinating! I felt the that fun stuff had been kept from me, and I was finally discovering it.

Mr. Tapscott,

How right you are! I am a mom of a 6 and an 8 year old boys.

6 months ago, I have signed my younger boy (who was 5 and 1/2 at the time) to take Math courses at Education Program for Gifted Youth made by Stanford. The results are amazing. In 6 months, he has completed grade 2 math, and then some. Teachers at school (he is finishing SK) are wondering what to do next year. He is going to a small private Russian/Jewish community school, Eligor, here in Toronto.

Now, I too as a parent have this question - what to do? I don't want to get him skipping classes because this frequently leads to social problems. I want him to be a normal boy, and study with people of his age. But, I don't want to slow him down academically.

The nice thing about EPGY is that it ADOPTS to his level. It knows which topics he passed with flying colours, and which ones need more attention. So, it gives him more teaching in those areas, and so on, until gradually he is up to speed on everything.

This method is so much better then traditional classroom, only because in a classroom, someone is always behind, and someone is always ahead.

My opinion - for informational and logical thinking, this is a new way forward.

The classroom should be for discussions, debates, team work, discovery, games, role-playing, arts and those types of activities.

A healthy mix would be ideal.

Thank you for bringing this up!

Hello Mrs. Boughton:

In a previous newsletter you mentioned that Elmwood would be offering two camps this summer. Could you please let me know where I can obtain the application forms for the camps and further information if it is available.

Thanks in advance,
Norma Lalonde

Thanks for the mention, Cheryl. It was a great conference, don't you think? I know I took away a great deal; not least of which a sense of the great collegiality in CAIS.

Best,

Brad
